Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has confirmed that one out of four pupils in Nairobi used to miss school due to lack of food.
Speaking during the 20th anniversary of Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO), Sakaja highlighted that this alarming statistic motivated him to initiate the “Dishi na County” program.
This initiative has provided nutritious meals to over 200,000 pupils daily at a cost of Ksh 5 each, significantly increasing primary school enrollment by 26pc.
The Governor anticipates that the number of pupils benefiting from this program will rise to over 300,000 in the third term.
SHOFCO celebrating its 20th anniversary is a grassroots movement focused on transforming urban slums through critical services, community advocacy, and education and leadership development for women and girls.
