Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has warned environmental polluters to stop the vice or face the wrath of the law.
Speaking at Athiriver Chief’s camp where she launched a countywide comprehensive clean-up exercise dubbed ‘Ng’arisha Mtaa na Governor Wavinya’ the Machakos county boss declared the writing was on the wall for those caught littering or discharging waste contrary to established regulations.
“My Government has adopted a zero waste principle in both solid and sewerage waste management. Heavy penalties will be meted out on those who deliberately litter the environment,” Said Wavinya.
The Governor cautioned developers against discharging raw sewage in rivers and other undesignated areas, terming it a serious threat to the health of residents.
“Those who have built residential flats and industries must ensure that they are connected to an authorized sewer line. Those caught violating the directive will be arrested and prosecuted without negotiation,” said the Governor.
“We must change our mindset regarding the way we manage our environment. Cleanliness is next to Godliness. We must remember that a clean and neat environment will enhance our physical health and create a conducive environment of doing business,” she added
The program, which will be implemented through the County Department of Lands, Urban Development, Housing and Energy will instantly employ 3,000 women and youth who will be absorbed in a phased out arrangement earning a daily stipend of sh 672.
The Governor said the three municipalities of Mavoko, Machakos and Kangundo/Tala will provide all logistical and technical support required to facilitate the program, which she said was critical in attracting investors in the lower Eastern region’s richest county.
Wavinya said her administration will work in full collaboration with National Government agencies to ensure full compliance in order to boost the county’s environmental improvement rating.
