The government needs to have a situational analysis to make action plans, and work with unions to resolve the challenge of perennial doctors strikes that have affected the country since time immemorial.
This according to the Health Cabinet Secretary nominee Deborah Mlongo Barasa who was speaking when she appeared before the National Assembly’s Appointments Committee Thursday morning.
‘The doctors’ strike has been a challenge since time immemorial, and every CS has dealt with that. We need to look for long-term solutions and they are with us. I don’t have a solution, but we need to have a situational analysis, make action plans, and work with unions.’ Health CS Nominee Dr. Deborah Barasa.
Barasa who was the second candidate to appear before the committee noted that without the community owning Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), the implementation of it will be difficult.
“It is imperative that the community is informed, aware, and owns the SHIF. Without the community owning it, the implementation of the SHIF will be difficult.” Dr. Barasa said.
On the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) she noted that primary care networks are weak and need to be strengthened by embracing UHC from the community level.
Linda Mama Programme
While acknowledging the importance of Linda Mama programme, Dr. Barasa promised to ensure it is incorporated if she gets into office.
‘My daughter and I are beneficiaries of Linda Mama and I will ensure that it is incorporated if SHIF is rolled out.’ Health CS Nominee Dr. Barasa.
Dr. Barasa holds a Master of Medicine Internal Medicine from the University of Nairobi.
She declared her net worth at Ksh 455M.
