The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) clarified statements made by President William Ruto on live television concerning alleged killings in Githurai.

In a statement, Roseline Odede, Chairperson of KNCHR, refuted claims that the commission had released fake data about the alleged massacre in Githurai last week.

The commission indicated that they had not issued any statement on Githurai.

They explained that during their last press conference, they had made it clear that they did not have adequate information and were still in the process of confirming the happenings in Githurai, Rongai, Migori, Nakuru, and other parts of the country.

Odede noted that the data they reported constituted information in the commission’s possession at the time.

They had reports of 22 deaths arising from the protests as of Wednesday when they made their statement, and that is what they reported.

As of today, their data shows 24 deaths from the time the protests began to date.

The commission in conclusion expressed their condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery as they reiterated their commitment to providing accurate information and upholding human rights across the nation.
