The ongoing debate on national resources sharing has taken a new twist after Ruto’s allies in Ukambani called for the inclusion of geographical area in the matrix.

Ruto’s pointman in Kitui County and Kitui East MP Nimrod Mbai want the conversation on one man, one shilling, one vote ignited by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua changed to One Man, One Shilling, One Kilometer.

“We are totally against the one man, one shilling formula,” said Mbai. “Let it be one man, one kilometre, one shilling.”

According to Mbai, Kitui County is fast and sparsely populated. Therefore, the mantra being pushed by the people of the Mt. Kenya region will be a big blow.

Kitui County is fast and sparsely populated, said Mbai. Hence, the formula being pushed by the people of the Mt. Kenya region will be a big blow.

The second-term UDA lawmaker said they would rally together with North Eastern and Coastal counties to denounce what he described as a divisive formula.

“This formula is very divisive and should be condemned overwhelmingly,” said Mbai. “We want a formula that takes into consideration the issue of geographical area so that our Governor of Kitui can get extra Ksh 8 billion.”

The United Democratic Alliance party (UDA) law maker said that if the geographical area aspect is put into consideration, constituencies in Kitui will be able to get Ksh 300 million up from Ksh 150 million.

Mbai spoke in Kitui after a meeting with UDA grassroots leaders ahead of the party elections slated for 28th June 2024. He is vying for the party’s Kitui county chairman position.

Speaking in a separate occasion in Makueni, Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse weighed in on the issue, saying: “If implemented, Makueni county will lose Ksh 658 million, Machakos will lose Ksh 1.2 billion, while Kitui will be minus Ksh 770 million.”

“Let us also consider the levels of poverty, development, and geographical area in any successful formulas,” said Mutuse.
