The Meru health workers’ strike has entered its sixth day Tuesday, causing a crisis in Meru County’s health sector and paralyzing operations in all public facilities.

The health workers stormed Meru County Government Offices following complaints over alleged inadequate staffing, lack of promotions, and other unresolved grievances.

The striking workers, including 144 doctors in Meru, expressed their frustration that the Executive had not honoured a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) signed on October 6, 2023.

According to the health workers, the Union and Executive had agreed that the County Public Service Board would issue letters of appointment for all common cadre doctors from Job Group M-N by November 23.

The implementation in the payroll was to be done from April 1, 2024, with any arrears factored into the 2024/2025 budget, which has not yet happened.

Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (KUCO) Meru Secretary Moses Baiyenia stated that among the unresolved issues were pending promotions.
