Tetra Pak has launched its 25th Sustainability Report, tracking the company’s progress against its sustainability agenda, focusing on food systems, circularity, climate, nature, and social sustainability.
Coinciding with the United Nations’ World Environment Day on June 5, the FY23 Sustainability Report reveals a 20 per cent reduction in value chain GHG emissions and a 47 per cent reduction in GHG emissions across its operations since 2019.
This achievement aligns Tetra Pak with its target of net-zero GHG emissions in its operations by 2030 and supports its long-term ambition to achieve net-zero GHG emissions across the value chain by 2050.
A significant milestone in the report is the launch of an aseptic beverage carton with a paper-based barrier, reducing its carbon footprint by 33 per cent.
This innovation brings Tetra Pak closer to developing the world’s most sustainable food package and follows a €100 million investment in packaging research and development in 2023, with similar investments planned annually for the next five to ten years.
Adolfo Orive, President & CEO of Tetra Pak, emphasized the importance of collaboration across the food industry to feed a growing population sustainably.
He highlighted the company’s global presence and end-to-end solutions as opportunities to collaborate with stakeholders, including farmers, food producers, suppliers, policymakers, and consumers.
Orive reiterated Tetra Pak’s commitment to transforming the world’s food systems to ensure they are more secure, resilient, and sustainable.
The FY23 report also showcases other achievements and ongoing initiatives.
Tetra Pak expanded its School Feeding Programmes, helping 64 million children in 49 countries access milk and other nutritious beverages.
The company accelerated recycling efforts, with a 7 per cent increase in carton packages collected and sent for recycling globally and a 14 per cent rise in the volume of polyAl sent for recycling.
Tetra Pak was recognized for the eighth consecutive year in the CDP Forests ‘A List’ and received an ‘A-‘ rating in Water Security, despite being the first year of reporting in this area.
Additionally, Tetra Pak actively implemented the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
