Stakeholders in the education sector have been challenged to embrace collaborative approaches and leverage on technology to ensure the African education sector aligns with international standards.
Speakers at the ongoing 4th African Curriculum Association (ACA) conference which kicked off on Monday, said there is need for the education sector to be more innovative to overcome current challenges in line with the theme ‘Learning for Sustainable Features Connections between Curriculum, Cognition, and Context.
According to the fourth Industrial revolution (4IR) and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, education is expected to prepare students for a future where the competencies they will need to succeed are constantly evolving.
State Department for Higher Education and Research Principal Secretary Beatrice Muganda Inyangala said countries in Africa continue to address inequities in provision of education.
“About 244 million children are out of school with Sub Saharan Africa having the highest number .I hope we share knowledge, experience and best practices to enhance and improve our education across the continent, “she said.
The conference aims to achieve a shared understanding of the importance of aligning basic education, curriculum, teacher education and learning assessment to improve learning outcomes.
ACA also hopes to integrate and stimulate technology in the processes of aligning curriculum, teacher education and learning assessment.
“For a long time our curriculum has remained out modeled but through innovation we should have something to sell to the West and drive the research agenda where we will have more partnerships. The shift to CBC and modernizing the sector form key discourses in the agenda, “added the PS.
She encouraged learners to use whatever resources are at their disposal to make teaching and learning interesting. She also called on curriculum developers, implementers, education administrators, development partners and other key stakeholders to build networks in order to improve the sector.
Curriculum specialist and African Curriculum Association Secretary General, Gertrude Namubiru said she hopes that key stakeholders and partners will be in a position to craft ways of improving the education sector across Africa
The conference is organized by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD)
