President William Ruto is set to kick off a five-day developmental tour to Mt. Kenya region, the home turf of his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua.

This will also be first time the President is visiting the region after it overwhelmingly voted for him in the August 2022 elections. The President last visited the region in January 2023 for a Cabinet retreat at the Mt. Kenya Safari Club and later attended an interdenominational prayer in Nanyuki town where he promised to fast-track development projects after holding a consultative meeting with the area leadership.

According to State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed on Friday, the President will begin his tour this weekend in Kiambu County, where he will commission the Githurai Water Supply Project which will benefit 500,000 residents and connect 8,400 people to clean and safe water.

He will also launch the redevelopment of Githurai Market, part of the President’s commitment to build 400 markets in three years to dignify Mama Mboga’s hustles.

In Kirinyaga County, Ruto will commission the upgrade of the 42.5Km Marua – Kwa Wambui Road.

In Nyeri County, the Head of State will launch road and water projects: the upgrading to bitumen standards and maintenance of the 45km Ichamara – Kariti road in Mukurweini and the Kaigonji water project and commission the Othaya water project which is expected to benefit over 60,000 people with 216 new sewer connections and thereafter open the Nyeri Stage and Bus Park.

In his busy schedule, President Ruto is expected to hold a meeting with members of the executive for cabinet meeting at the Sagana State Lodge.

Other development projects dominating the President’s tour to the region include the opening of a new KCC facility in Kiganjo and a three-storeyed, 175-bed capacity Level IV Hospital in Naromoru.

On the Affordable Housing, Dr. Ruto will preside over the groundbreaking of the Gichugu Affordable Housing Program in Kirinyaga County and in Thika, Kiambu County.

The housing project in Kirinyaga entails the construction of 140 housing units while the housing project in Thika will provide 975 units, with 20pc of the units reserved for civil servants.
