The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has condemned the ethnic clashes at the Sondu Kericho-Kisumu border that has left eight people dead and 18 seriously injured.

In a statement Thursday, the commission called on the political leadership of both Kisumu and Kericho counties to appeal to their followers to cease hostilities and exercise tolerance.

“As a commission, we have put together an elaborate program to address the emerging issues bordering on resource sharing, ethnic animosity, and political alignment. We request for calm and tolerance through relevant law enforcement agencies to enable dialogue and mediations,” NCIC Chairperson Samuel Kobia said.

Additionally, the Commission has also cautioned Kenyans against holding demonstrations against some emerging groups in the country.

It said that such acts could lead to violence and divide the country further.

“Indeed, we know that our Constitution 2010 defends the rights of every Kenyan, irrespective of their gender affiliations or preferences. Every Kenyan has multiple identities and singling out one identity for attack is ill advised,” the statement read in part.

NCIC has called upon all leaders to put the interests of the country at heart to restore peace within their counties and the country at large.
