The national dialogue committee will today chart the next course of action following completion of public hearings.
Members of the bipartisan committee are reconvening at the Bomas of Kenya Friday to define their agenda as they seek to settle on the formulae of addressing outstanding issues.
The committee, which kicked off proceedings after it signed its framework agreement on August 30 giving it 60 days to hold talks and submit a report to Parliament, is deliberating issues the opposition has with the government.
In an advert published on September 1, 2023, the bipartisan committee invited members of the public to submit their memoranda on various issues including the cost of living, implementation of the two-thirds gender rule, governance including promoting national unity and inclusivity in public appointments and adequate checks and balances, audit of last year’s elections and restructuring and reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission
Last week, three petitioners had moved to court to challenge the constitutionality of the ten-member national dialogue committee.
In their petition certified as urgent, Issa Chamao,Paul Kirui and Patrick Ekirapa argued that entrusting the amendment of the Constitution exclusively to politicians sets a dangerous precedent.
In their prayers, the petitioners sought the court’s intervention asking for the matter to be certified as urgent and the court to issue conservatory orders stopping the bipartisan team from considering issues as contained in the framework.
In the Committee, the Kenya Kwanza Alliance is represented by majority leader Kimani Ichungw’ah who is the delegation leader deputized by Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire with other members comprising of Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot, EALA MP Omar Hassan Omar and Bungoma woman representative Catherine Wambilianga.
The Azimio Coalition is led by wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka deputized by the leader of minority Party Opiyo Wandayi, DAP-K Party leader Eugene Wamalwa,Nyamira senator Okong’o Mogeni and Malindi MP Amina Mnyazi.
