The Kilifi County government has joined partners in the fight against Gender Based Violence.
According to statistics from the Department of Gender, Culture and Social Services, the county experiences various forms of violence against children, women, men and the elderly in society with three in ten people falling victim to the vice.
The Chief Officer for Gender, Culture and Social Services Agneta Karembo singled out that among the most rampant forms of violence in the county include, killing of the elderly, religious radicalization, stigmatization of women and wife and husband battering.
During the Red Card Campaign fashion show held at Seven Island Resort in Watamu, Kilifi County Police Commander Fatma Hadi called on the community to abandon archaic traditional cultures that were giving her department a hard time in trying to get justice to victims of GBV.
Dr Djibril Diallo, the President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Africa Renaissance and Diaspora Network (ARDN) said that one in three women in the world had undergone GBV.
Dr Diallo lauded Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro for being in the forefront in championing anti GBV campaigns.
Mung’aro on his part said that his government was in the process of setting up a GBV rescue center that will act as a safe house for victims of GBV.
Kilifi County First Lady Susan Mung’aro said that her office will work tirelessly to end discrimination and violence against women and girls.
The event was also graced by Dr. Sharon Okubo, a supermodel, philanthropist, and Ambassador for ARDN.
