The Cabinet on Friday approved the Public Audit (Amendment) Bill, 2023 in a move aimed at boosting the war against corruption in the country.

Speaking shortly after chairing a cabinet meeting in Mombasa, President William Ruto noted that the latest legislation will enhance the Auditor General’s independence and transparency to ensure proper utilization of public resources through audits and also provide power for fraud investigations.

He reiterated that his administration will sustain the fight against impunity in public offices ensuring zero tolerance to corruption.

“There is simply no space for wastage and corruption because that would be the recipe for disastrous failure. Our tolerance for corruption, therefore, is absolute zero,” President Ruto said

The head of state added; “It is important that as government, we communicate this commitment clearly because the citizens and taxpayers deserve to know it as a matter of right,”

His deputy Rigathi Gachagua indicated that the President, in fact, reminded members of the executive, during the cabinet meeting, that funds must be used prudently for the purposes for which they have been collected.

“His famous declaration of “Mambo Matatu,” revolves around taxpayers’ money,” said Gachagua

“The President is here, his government will not entertain leakages, misappropriation, corruption, and irresponsible spending of taxpayers’ money,” said the DP

Gachagua further defended the head of state from claims that his foreign trips were a waste of public resources describing the sentiments as misplaced. According to the DP, “Every journey that has been planned for the president outside the country is carefully planned, and is an economic gain to the people of Kenya,”
