The government is in the process of finalising the introduction of special number plates and a raft of new incentives including lower parking rates and special prime parking spaces in cities for Electronic Vehicles (EVs) in the country.
Speaking during the launch of a taskforce to draft a policy on E-Mobility, Transport Cabinet Secretary, Kipchumba Murkomen, said the draft e-mobility policy is moving to the public participation stage until the 20th April 2024, with the policy including a raft of non-fiscal and fiscal incentives that will do away with Taxes imposed on imports of EVs.
The CS was speaking Wednesday at the Kenyatta International Conventional Center KICC during the launch of the E-mobility policy.
Further, CS Murkomen added that Ministry of transport will also propose to the Cabinet a phased approach replacement of government vehicles to EVs in efforts to save on expense and a cleaner environment.
Meanwhile, the CS met African Development Bank team led by Mike Salawou, Director of the Infrastructure and Urban Development Department at Transcom House.
They discussed future cooperation, including urban mobility, climate resilience, Lake Victoria Ring Road, support for expedited adoption of PPP projects and support for currently unfunded road sections serving the LAPSSET corridor, which falls between Isiolo and Lokichar.
The CS and the African Development Bank team also agreed on follow-up interactions at which the latest innovative resource mobilization approaches developed by the Bank can be shared with Government officers.
He said he looks forward to Kenya participating actively in the AfDB’s new initiative on sustainable road maintenance, which is at the pilot stage and also look forward to the AfDB Annual Meeting, which is set to take place in Nairobi later in the year.
The African Development Bank has been a steadfast partner in developing the transport sector in Kenya.
Past projects include transformative initiatives like the construction of Thika Road, Isiolo – Merille Road, Marsabit – Moyale road, Outer Ring road in Nairobi, Timboroa – Eldoret Road and Mwatate – Taveta road. Current projects include Kenol – Marua road, Isebania – Ahero road, Mombasa – Kwa Jomvu road, Mombasa – Kilifi road, Eldoret Bypass, Kitale – Suam road and Elwak – Rhamu road. The Leseru – Kitale and Morpus – Lokichar roads will be initiated shortly
