A woman charged with the murder of her husband pleaded for leniency and forgiveness when she took to the witness stand on Tuesday in Makueni Court.
Jenifer Nziku Wambua, appearing before Makueni High Court Presiding Judge Teresia Matheka, recounted the events of the night of August 4, 2019.
She stated that her husband, Kennedy Mutunga Muasa, came home drunk and started arguing about the food she had prepared for him.
Nziku testified that she asked her husband whether he had brought medicine for their sick child, to which he angrily responded that he was tired of supporting them. This exchange escalated into a physical altercation.
She claimed that her husband picked up a kitchen knife and attempted to stab her. In the ensuing struggle, he tripped and fell, resulting in a pool of blood on the floor.
“I plead with the court to be merciful and forgive me as you make your judgment since I was just trying to defend myself and my 9-month-old child from my husband who had turned violent,” Nziku stated.
The incident occurred on August 4, 2019, at Shimo Estate, Wote Division, in Makueni Sub County.
The prosecution’s report indicates that Mutunga came home intoxicated and started quarrelling with his wife, leading to a fight.
During the altercation, the accused allegedly picked up a knife and stabbed the deceased.
A post-mortem report revealed that the cause of death was due to a stab wound that penetrated the abdominal cavity, perforating the small intestines and causing severe bleeding.
Furthermore, a DNA test conducted by the Government Chemist in Nairobi confirmed that the bloodstains on the knife matched Mutunga’s blood.
Judge Matheka set the next hearing date for July 9, 2024.
