Songwriter, musician and activist Juliani is lamenting the loss of the Dandora Hip-hop city centre the latest of government demolitions.
Sharing a video of the site’s demolition, Juliani said: “Gotten word that our community centre, Dandora Hip Hop City is being demolished. The whole 2-storey building. Yes, it’s close to a river. We purchased the building more than 7 years ago.”
The community centre served as the base for the School of Rhyme and Hip-Hop City FM – a community radio and business incubator.
This community initiative was aimed at providing opportunities for individuals interested in education, arts, business, technology and environmental conservation.
“This is not the end but inauma sana! To think that we were working on expanding to the neighbouring spaces and upgrading the facility,” Juliani added.
The government through Cabinet Secretary, Kithure Kindiki, ordered the reclaiming of riparian land in a bid to move people away from properties along large water bodies, especially after the recent floods that killed hundreds of people across the country.
Residents and owners of properties located 30 metres from Ngong, Mathare and Nairobi rivers were offered a 24-hour voluntary vacation period before forceful evictions were mandated.
