State to begin construction of 42MW solar plant next year

The Seven Forks solar power plant is expected to start operations in December 2027.

Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira says the Ksh 8.4 billion loan facility funding from the French Development Agency (FDA) for the project, will see the plant offer the cheapest power tarrifs in the country.

The Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) will start construction of the 42.5MW solar plant at the seven folks early next year.

The project i will add clean power to the national grid in a bid to complement the hydro power during the day.

The solar plant is expected to offer the cheapest power tariffs in the country once it starts operations, December 2027.

The power generating firm says they have on boarded two investors in their green park in Olkaria with a numbers of investors seeking licenses to set up shop near the geothermal sites.

This comes even as Kenya expects to add another 70MW from the Menengai geothermal sites as Globeleq and Kaishan completes drilling of their wells.

Kenya which is ranked the 7th largest producer of geothermal power in the World has also shown interests in getting a permanent seat at the international geothermal commission and has applied to host the 2029 geothermal congress as it plans to consolidate its position as a regional leader in clean energy.
