The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is urging all motorists, road users and Kenyans in general to embrace the culture of compliance with traffic laws and regulations as a way of enhancing road safety.
According to the Commission, the failure of motorists, especially those operating Public Service Vehicles (PSV) to comply with traffic laws increases levels of corruption on Kenyan roads as the motorists seek to bribe their way out of law enforcement actions.
EACC Spokesperson Eric Ngumbi notes that the problem of traffic corruption is not entirely initiated by the police officers who extort money from the drivers and other road users. “Motorists are part of it.”
Ngumbi in addition emphasizes that Kenyans should realize that corruption in traffic management can yield disastrous consequences including loss of lives or permanent disabilities through accidents arising from the operation of unroadworthy vehicles, carrying excess passengers, and other violations.
In this regard, the Commission is urging Kenyans to proactively shun traffic corruption as a key element of road safety.
Meanwhile, EACC has enhanced surveillance on the roads and will be taking action against any person offering, giving, soliciting or receiving bribes to compromise traffic law enforcement.
Suspected corruption may be reported to EACC through Toll-Free No.1551.
