Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko can now breathe a sigh of relief after the court allowed an application by the Director of Public Prosecutions to drop terrorism charges against him and two others.

Sonko was arraigned at the Kahawa Law Courts and charged with terror-related charges in 2021 alongside Clifford Ochieng Ouko and Benjamin Onyango Odhiambo.

He was accused of recruiting unknown persons to commit or participate in the commission of a terrorist act in contravention of the Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2012.

His co-accused Clifford Ochieng was charged with being in possession of military attire for the facilitation of a terrorist act.

The third accused person, Benjamin Odhiambo, was charged with being in possession of a military camouflage jacket for the facilitation of a terrorist act. They all denied the charges levelled against them.

Addressing journalists, an excited Sonko said he will not seek compensation for what he termed as fictitious charges.

“I thank God the ODPP has withdrawn the fictitious terrorism charges against me before the Kahawa chief magistrate’s court. I take this opportunity to ask God to forgive all those who played a role in imposing these fake terrorism charges on me. I don’t intend to sue the state or anyone, Lord, forgive them. Wasamehe Mungu” he said.
