The Commission on Administrative Justice has sought clarity from the National Registration Bureau as to why Kenyans have to wait for so long to acquire National Identification Documents.
In its demand, the CAJ, popular as the Ombudsman wants the institution’s director to address concerns over prolonged issuance to the extent that it hinders access by citizens to a number of services.
“Pursuant to section 8 of the Commission on Administrative Justice Act, 2011, the Commission takes cognizance of serious complaints published on various media platforms over the delay in processing and issuance of ID cards,”
“The Commission has given the Director, National Registration Bureau seven days to respond to the delay in the issuance of Identification Documents. This follows complaints on various media platforms over the delay in processing and issuing of ID cards,” CAJ confirmed in a statement Thursday
The Florence Kajuju-led commission indicated that it has been monitoring media reports, where parents and students enrolling in various higher learning institutions are expressing concerns over inordinate delays adversely affecting their right to apply for critical public services,”
The services facing major disruptions as a result, according to the Commission include; financing from the Higher Education Loans Board, traveling documents, and employment opportunities, among others,”
Within the stated seven days, the Commission wants the NRB Director to address issues such as; challenges the department is experiencing in the issuance and processing of ID cards; as well as measures that the department has taken if any to resolve the crisis;
Ombudsman also wants NRB to indicate expected timelines for the issuance of the pending ID Cards; besides service delivery timelines regarding the issuance of the ID Cards.
