Abdul Malik Abdullah Ibrahim, a Director of Peace for Northern, Eastern & Coastal Corridors of Kenya (P4NECK), is calling on the Gen Z demonstrators to engage in dialogue with the government to ensure a productive path forward.
Through a statement, Ibrahim noted that President William Ruto’s government has shown flexibility in addressing the protesters’ concerns.
He acknowledged the recent wave of demonstrations led by the Gen Z population in Kenya.
The protests, marked by unprecedented levels of participation, were sparked by long-standing issues of injustice and corruption within the country.
Ibrahim praised the efforts of the Gen Z demonstrators, stating that their actions have highlighted critical issues plaguing Kenya.
He remarked that P4NECK believes these demonstrations have brought a blessing to Kenya by shedding light on the injustices and corruption that have long been a problem.
However, Ibrahim expressed concern over the infiltration of the demonstrations by individuals engaging in looting and vandalism. He emphasized that while the initial intent of the protests was valid, the direction had unfortunately shifted due to the actions of these disruptive elements.
Stressing the importance of bridging the gap between the government and the public, as well as between the police and the public, Ibrahim warned that ongoing animosity could lead to greater instability.
He emphasized the role of the police in maintaining internal order.
In his address, Ibrahim also appealed to the media to play a constructive role in fostering stability.
Concluding his statement, Ibrahim paid tribute to the members of parliament who have shown commitment to the welfare of the people and called for continued efforts to translate the cry of Kenyans into meaningful action.
