Spain edge England to EURO 2024 title

Spain were crowned champions of Europe for the fourth time  after they beat England 2-1 in Euro 2024 final at Berlin’s Olympia stadion.

Gareth Southgate’s side were sunk by Mikel Oyarzabal’s late winner to leave England heartbroken again in a second successive European Championship final.

Spain’s young star wingers combined to give them the lead two minutes after the break as Lamine Yamal’s pass opened up space for Nico Williams to beat England keeper Jordan Pickford with a powerful low finish.

Cole Palmer raised hopes of another dramatic comeback with a composed left-foot strike after 73 minutes.

It was Spain, however, who snatched the win four minutes from time as Oyarzabal slid home Marc Cucureya’s cross to hand Spain their fourth Europe title and a first since 2012.

Captain Harry Kane says England’s defeat by Spain in the final will “hurt for a long time”.

“This was another tough moment for the team and for me personally,” Bayern Munich striker Kane said.

“Credit to Spain, they played well. We couldn’t find our rhythm in the game and in these big moments you get punished.

“It was a tough tournament physically and mentally. You get so close to the highest of the highs, the pinnacle of our careers, and now everyone is at the lowest of the lows.

“We haven’t found a way to win that trophy and it is going to hurt for a long time.”
