Suspects in Embakasi gas explosion detained for 21 days

The court has allowed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to detain four suspects linked to the Embakasi gas explosion that left seven people dead and injured more than 200 others.

Senior Principal Magistrate Dolphina Alego on Wednesday granted the request of the DCI to hold three suspects for 21days to conclude investigations on the matter.

However, one of the suspects who has a delicate condition and is unwell, will be remanded at Capitol Hill police station for a maximum of 14 days.

The alleged owner of the gas plant owner and two NEMA officials will be held at Embakasi Police Station for 21 days.

The four suspects include Derrick Kimathi (Prime Suspect), David Ongare (Director Environment Compliance), Joseph Makau (Head Environmental Impact Assessment) and Mirrian Kioko.

In a statement on Wednesday, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura announced the arrest of a fifth suspect,  Linet Cheruiyot who is a Senior Environmental Officer at the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).

The suspect is in police custody and is set to be arraigned at the Makadara Law Courts today for custodial orders.
