The Tana Delta is still experiencing flooding owing to the heavy rains Central region catchment area, government has said.
According to a statement by the Ministry of Interior, overflow of the Seven Forks Dams still poses to exacerbate flooding in the Tana Delta and impacting Garissa, Tana River, and Lamu Counties.
The statement further says flooding is expected in low lying areas, riparian areas and urban areas while landslides/mudslides may occur in areas with steep slopes, escarpments and ravines.
“Lakes Victoria and Baringo are projected to continue causing backflow and flooding of
Counties in the Lake Victoria and Lake Baringo Basins.” Read the statement.
Following the floods experienced in the country during the long rains period, the number of fatalities stands at 277 people with a cumulative 188 people having been reported injured.
There are 75 people currently reported missing and a total of 58,009 households have been displaced affecting approximately 290,045 people.
163 camps have been set up across 22 Counties hosting 39,023 people.
“1,967 schools have been affected by the floods as well as 62 health facilities also affected in 11 Counties.” Read the statement.
There are a total of 419 Water Sanitation and Hygiene Facilities Damaged in 20 Counties and approximately crops on 9,816 acres of land have been destroyed as well as 8,722 livestock dead.
Government says, Kenya Coast Guard Service responsible for marine operations on the
territorial and inland waters is on high alert and positioned in Kisumu, Tana
River, Garissa, Kilifi and Nairobi Counties to offer required assistance.
There is enhanced surveillance for vector borne diseases ongoing in all Counties in
people by the Ministry of Health and livestock by the Directorate of Veterinary
Services.
“1,200,000 livestock have been vaccinated against Rift Valley Fever and 450 sheep vaccinated against blue tongue disease.” Government stated.
The areas prone to landslides and mudslides in various Counties have been identified as high-risk areas with adjacent settlements being evacuated with sites for temporary shelter for displaced persons coordinated by County Security Committees.
Fishing at Turkwel Dam in Turkana County remains suspended through a notice issued by the Kerio Valley Development Authority (KVDA).
In Mororo to Garissa in Tana River County an advisory was issued on wearing of life jackets in private boats ferrying people.
Further the Government is carrying out assessments of damaged roads and mobilizing
resources to address critical sections and restore safe travel.
