Unseen Nairobi will host the screening of the Arthouse film The Sleeping Negro until the end of February in celebration of black history month.
The film will screen on February 13, 16-20, and 23-27.
The screening is part of this year’s Quartiers Lointains 7th edition which seeks out emerging film talents based in France and Africa to further show and distribute their work to the rest of the world.
This year’s ambassador is screenwriter and director Alice Diop.
Directed by Skinner Myers, The Sleeping Negro follows a young black man who after being confronted with a series of racially charged incidents, must overcome rage, alienation, and hopelessness to find his humanity.
Discussing his main goal as a director Myers said, “What I’m trying to do is theorize a way to create a brand new Black cinema.
“Like a new Black cinematic language that does not adhere to anything that’s Eurocentric or Hollywood.”
The film has received several accolades including the FIPRESCI award at IFF Mannheim Heidelberg (2021), Best Narrative Feature at FESTIC Burkina Faso (2023), and the Special Jury Award at the Diorama Film Festival in India (2023).
