The United Kingdom members of Parliament and those from the House of Commons have written to the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Affairs, David Cameron, to provide proactive support for Morocco’s autonomy plan over Western Sahara.
31 members of Parliament and the House of Commons wrote an open letter on May 23, 2024, expressing their belief that Morocco’s plan for autonomy over the Western Sahara will increase stability and strengthen regional security.
“Amid the vast turmoil we are witnessing globally, it has become more crucial than ever for the UK to strengthen its alliances with stable, like-minded nations to promote regional stability and international security. Morocco stands paramount among these partner nations; it is a top strategic ally in North Africa, with shared values and perspectives crucial to both our countries.” read part of the letter
It also says that in order to reach its full potential, support from our financial institutions—including UKEF and BII—is necessary. Other nations, like the US and France, have lately taken a similar stance.
According to the letter, the dangerous escalations and catastrophic effects of conflict in the Middle East have intensified the spread of terrorism and extremism, providing an opportunity for hostile militias to broaden their ideological reach and influence beyond their own borders.
“Additionally, the growing instability in the Sahel creates a vacuum that poses a significant risk of spreading instability and malign influence, posing a threat of further fragmentation and extremist indoctrination.” The report read
Members also contend that there should be no more division and that the Western Sahara region presents a good prospect for stability and progress, which could be compromised if the problem is not resolved swiftly and sensibly.
“The country’s efforts have not only significantly contributed to strengthening alliances that are pivotal for ensuring peace and prosperity across Africa and the Middle East, but also as part of a global security architecture that addresses challenges like radicalization, terrorism, and migration crises.” The letter emphasized
Their assessment of the Western Sahara region’s potential was that it could greatly improve supply chain security, open up new markets, and create prospects for energy.
In their view, the developments also highlight the area as a center of innovation and global collaboration in Africa, in addition to demonstrating sustainable success.
This would also align with our trade deal with Morocco, which was upheld by the High Court of Justice last year and encompasses the Western Sahara.
During their tour to Morocco, which included a visit to the Western Sahara, the MPs also claimed that they saw firsthand the enormous potential and opportunities that exist for both the local community and the United Kingdom.
“We have gained a multifaceted perspective on the region’s opportunities and challenges by interacting with a range of stakeholders, such as human rights organizations, civil society members, and local leaders. Our observations of the international legal framework, together with the perspectives of esteemed academics such as Professor Marc Weller of Cambridge University’s Chair of International Law and International Constitutional Studies, strengthen our belief that the UK must proactively support Morocco’s Autonomy Plan.”The letter continued
“We have engaged with various stakeholders, including local leaders, civil society representatives, and human rights organizations, gaining a multi-faceted perspective on the region’s challenges and prospects. Our observations, coupled with insights from respected scholars like Professor Marc Weller, Cambridge University’s Chair of International Law and International Constitutional Studies, on the international legal framework, reinforce our conviction that the United Kingdom must provide proactive support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan.” The MPS continued to stress
They supported Morocco’s autonomy proposal for the Western Sahara, arguing that it offers a workable route to long-term peace and stability while also being balanced with respect for regional customs and democratic goals.
“With broad backing from our Western allies and more than 80 countries worldwide, the initiative is heralded as the most practical and pragmatic path to stability, emphasizing that it is time to move beyond inertia. Rallying around this plan, which ultimately stands as the sole realistic solution, underscores a global commitment to resolving the issue.” The letter continued to read
The legislators cautioned against the risks of the UK maintaining its neutrality on the matter since doing so would compromise regional security.
Morocco deserves our unequivocal and complete support; it is our responsibility, and the security of the region urgently demands it.” concluded the letter.
Morocco’s ambition for autonomy over Western Sahara has already garnered support from a number of European, African, South American, and North American nations.
