Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi demonstrated his commitment to the community by donating essential supplies to more than 500 flood victims from his constituency.

The event, held at the Westlands Constituency Office, was made possible through the support of the Cabinet Secretary for Trade, Investment and Industry, Rebecca Miano, and the Permanent Secretary for Industry, Dr. Juma Mukhwana.

The supplies, which included food, blankets, and mattresses, were distributed to families from the most severely impacted areas of Westlands.

In his remarks during the event, MP Wanyonyi expressed gratitude for the rain but acknowledged the unexpected flooding challenges in Westlands. “We used to pray for rain, and it has come down in large amounts.

Nobody imagined that Westlands could have flooding challenges,” he said. He praised CS Miano and PS Dr. Mukhwana for their quick response to his call for assistance and their readiness to support the flood victims.

“We have many others who are affected, but these ones here are more critical. Slowly, we will get to them,” Wanyonyi assured the crowd. He also urged residents living in flood-prone areas to move to safer ground for their own protection. “Your life is precious,” he emphasized.

In addition to highlighting the current crisis, MP Wanyonyi pointed out broader issues like building on riparian land and the need for better planning to prevent future flooding. “Floods have taught us that we have so many houses built on riparian land and next to rivers where they are susceptible to flooding,” he noted.

Permanent Secretary Dr. Juma Mukhwana spoke warmly about his long-standing relationship with MP Wanyonyi, emphasizing their shared history and his admiration for the work Wanyonyi is doing in Westlands.

He also echoed the need to protect nature, citing environmentalist Wangari Maathai’s words, “Nature is very vengeful.” Dr. Mukhwana stressed the importance of planting trees and respecting natural water flow to mitigate future flooding risks.

CS Rebecca Miano also commended MP Wanyonyi for his dedication to the community, noting that her ministry assembled the resources to provide relief thanks to the leadership of President Ruto.

“We have brought soap, beans, blankets, cooking oil, maize flour, mattresses, sanitary pads, sugar, milk, rice, millet, tea leaves, and several other things,” Miano said, emphasizing that the supplies would be distributed by MP Wanyonyi and his team.

Miano also addressed women specifically, encouraging them to continue supporting their families during this challenging time and mentioning her ministry’s efforts to support women in business. “I want women to engage with women in Westlands on business, challenges, and help you get capital for business,” she said
